Winter Weather and Foundation Damage

Posted January 16, 2024, under Blog

Winter weather can have some damaging effects on your home’s foundation. Thanks to lower temperatures and higher levels of rainfall, these seasonal changes can increase existing damage to your foundation or deteriorate the structure.

Check out 4 ways winter weather can wreak havoc on your home’s foundation below!

1. Erosion: California has been experiencing higher volumes of rainfall over the last two years — and with this (much needed) precipitation comes erosion. High volumes of rainfall can cause erosion around the exterior landscape of your home, which can create foundation problems. This is why it’s crucial to have a good drainage system in place that can keep water away from your foundation. This can be done by the slope of the home or by directing it through a gutter system.

2. Pooling water: After heavy rainfall, it’s important to keep an eye on any pooling water near your home’s foundation. Water that pools near a structure may seem harmless, but in fact this standing water can cause major damage to your foundation. When water is stagnant, it slowly seeps into the ground and into the foundation. Again, this why it’s so important to have a proper drainage system in place that allows for water to flow away from the home to prevent it from ponding.

3. Clogged gutters: Gutters are an essential system in your home that help move rainwater away from the roof and the foundation. Leaves and debris can clog these systems, which in turn can lead to foundation damage. Clogged or damaged gutters can leak water onto the structure which can deteriorate the exterior walls of the foundation.

4. Cold air and dry soil conditions: As the air becomes drier in the winter months, so does the soil beneath your foundation. When the soil dries, it begins to shrink which can cause it to pull away from your foundation and cause the property to settle at an uneven rate.
