4.1 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Rancho Palos Verdes, Following Massive Japan Temblor

On Monday, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake rattled Southern California residents of Rancho Palos Verdes, with the shaking felt throughout Los Angeles County, even extending to Orange and Ventura Counties.

The quake occurred at 8:27 AM, and even disrupted Rose Parade attendees. Luckily, no injuries or damage was reported.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 10 miles southwest of San Pedro, 11 miles southeast of Rancho Palos Verdes, and 16 miles from downtown Long Beach, according to the L.A. Times.

California wasn’t the only region to experience a New Years Day temblor – Japan was struck by a massive 7.5 magnitude earthquake the same day.

The scary shaker occurred 190 miles northwest of Tokyo, 190 miles northeast of Kyoto, and 160 miles northeast of Nagoya.

The severe shaking led to the collapse of buildings in the area and started a fire in Wajima city.

One of the buildings to collapse was a seven-story structure that completely toppled over during the quake, and over 100 buildings have burned.

The death toll has climbed to 8 since the quake, as search and rescue efforts continue.
