Water Damage: How to Spot the Signs

Posted March 3, 2022, under Blog

Did you know that water damage can affect both the interior and exterior of your home? When a house is suffering from prolonged water damage, this can eventually create foundation problems.

There are many ways moisture can infiltrate your home and cause damage. Any water source such as sinks, tubs, showers, toilets, plumbing and appliances can create moisture problems.

It’s important to know the warning signs of water damage, so you can catch any issues early and repair them before it gets more serious.

One way to check for moisture on the interior of your home is to inspect your walls for discoloration, stains, dark spots, mold or mildew. Mold is typically black or green in color and mildew will look grey or white. Both types of fungi can cause serious health issues when you are exposed for long periods of time.

Some other indicators that there is water damage in your home include:

  • Peeling paint
  • Surface bubbles
  • Cracking and crumbling
  • Soft or spongy areas on the drywall
  • Swelling on the drywall edges and seams

Another way to detect any moisture issues is to smell the area. Mold and mildew will have an odor. Other signs of moisture include foggy windows or a sudden drop in pressure.

One of the most important areas around your home to check for water damage is your foundation. If you have noticed any pooling water or signs of damage, you should have your foundation inspected thoroughly by a foundation contractor.

Foundation problems arise when water penetrates the soil around the foundation, which causes it to expand. When the soil dries, it will contract. The process of expanding and contracting soil is what causes settlement. Water damage can also erode the soil that the house sits on.

When water damage is not identified and repaired, your home can eventually suffer structural damage. When this occurs, you’ll see bowing walls, uneven floors, doors and windows that don’t open or close correctly, and wall cracks.
