Strong Storms Continue to Slam California, Bringing Landslides, Sinkholes & Floods

Posted January 12, 2023, under Blog

This week, another string of strong storms slammed California. With sinkholes and floodwaters damaging towns throughout the state, and even resulting in the death of a young boy in San Luis Obispo County who was swept away by flood waters.

Some 50,000 people were under evacuation orders this week, while more than 110,000 homes and businesses were without power.

To date, 17 people have died from the atmospheric river strong storms which rolled into CA last month.

And since Monday, Southern California has gotten more than a foot and a half of rain and, in the mountains, five feet of snow.

Widespread flooding was reported in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties. The weather services likewise issued a flood watch for these areas, and in many parts of Northern California, through Thursday.

In addition to the relentless rainfall, gusty winds posed a major problem as well. Wind speeds as high as 88 miles per hour were recorded in the mountains north of Los Angeles. Thankfully, the tornados that were forecasted never emerged.

In San Francisco, heavy winds tore the roof right off a large apartment building and several highways throughout the Golden State have been shut down due to mudslides, fallen trees, and flooding.

Amtrak even suspended services after parts of the historic Union Station in Los Angeles were flooded.

The damaging effects of the storm continue to wreak havoc for residents and local businesses.

In Los Angeles, a sinkhole swallowed two cars on a busy Los Angeles street, trapping the motorists inside who had to be rescued by firefighters. Another sinkhole damaged 15 homes in Santa Barbara County.

If you own a home in California, now is the time to prepare for more wet weather events and to be able to spot the signs of water damage early.
