Southern California Storm Brings Heavy Rainfall, Dangerous Winds, & Flood Watch

Posted January 6, 2023, under Blog

Southern California residents were in for another week of severe weather, as a large storm moved through the region on Thursday. Heavy rainfall, flash flood concerns, and dangerous surf and winds wreaked havoc on the area, with thunderstorm and flood watch warnings issued by the weather service.

The storm was caused by a moisture-rich atmospheric river and brought roughly 2 inches of rain to Los Angeles. The heavy rainfall prompted road closures, water rescues, and evacuations near overflowing rivers. In Ventura County alone, there were three different river rescue operations, with a total of 5 rescues.  Luckily, there were no serious injuries reported.

By the beach, lifeguards reported extreme surf and waves reaching 8 to 12 feet high. Water flooded the beaches, even reaching the lifeguard towers in the sand. Many of Southern California’s beaches suffered serious erosion from the storm.

In the mountains, fire officials monitored burn areas for mud and debris flow, warning residents of possible evacuations. Landslides were also reported off Topanga Canyon Boulevard and the Pacific Coast Highway.

In addition to flooded roadways, downed trees and rockslides were reported all over Los Angeles and its neighboring cities, with many of those reports coming out of Beverly Hills.

While Southern California was hammered by the storm, it boded much better than Northern California. Up north, the storm resulted in the death of a toddler, and mass evacuations, power outages, and flooding.

Experts warned of a severe weather pattern headed to California in August, predicting month-long series of storms leading to massive rainfall and flooding for the entire state.

If you own a home in California, now is the time to prepare for more wet weather events and to be able to spot the signs of water damage early.

“Our nearly 30 years of experience in the field as a foundation contractor has shown water to be the worst offender in damaging home foundations. More than any other threat to a foundation, water damage shows up again and again as the most common problem. There are so many ways for it to get into a home’s structure and some of them are not even widely known,” says Julian Construction founder Julian De La Torre.
