Earthquake Rattles Central Los Angeles

Posted February 10, 2022, under Blog

On Tuesday, a 2.87 earthquake rattled Central Los Angeles, near the Silver Lake area.

The quake occurred at 7:38 AM and was centered roughly 2 miles from Echo Park and 2.5 miles from Hollywood.

While there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, many residents were awakened by the shaking.

While Tuesday’s temblor didn’t wreak too much havoc on Los Angeles, it should serve as a reminder of the impending earthquake threat that faces Southern California.

That’s because the San Andreas fault – which is located just 30 miles from central Los Angeles — is capable of producing extremely large and powerful quakes.

In fact, there is a 75% chance that one or more earthquakes ranging in a 7.0 or larger magnitude will strike Southern California in the next 30 years.

According to new data from the USGS ShakeOut model, if a large earthquake occurred in Los Angeles it could result in 1,800 deaths, 1,600 fires, 750 people missing or trapped inside collapsed buildings or homes, 50,000 ER visits, and 19 days of grueling search and rescue efforts.

To prepare for a large earthquake, it’s essential that you examine the safety of your home. This means bolting furniture to your walls, preparing an emergency kit, locating evacuation routes, and having your property inspected for any earthquake retrofitting additions.

What is earthquake retrofitting? Earthquake retrofitting, also known as seismic retrofitting, uses a series of connections including anchor bolts, shear paneling and framing anchors to help secure your home to its foundation. This keeps te structure from sliding off of its foundation or collapsing in the event of seismic activity.
