Californians Prepare for the “Big One” with the Great Shakeout

Posted October 25, 2021, under Blog

Throughout Los Angeles County and across California, residents took part in the Great ShakeOut Drill on Thursday.

At 10:21 AM, the drill asked all participants to drop, cover and hold on for one minute.

“What we do to prepare now, before the next big earthquake, will determine how well we can survive and recover,” a statement about the ShakeOut drill read from the Southern California Earthquake Center.

Last year, roughly 6.5 million Californians participated in the drill, and this year more than 1 million additional residents joined in.

In a statement about the Great ShakeOut, Mayor Eric Garcetti urged Californians to prepare for the inevitable “Big One.”

“As Californians, it’s critical that we know what to do and take steps to be prepared before, not after, an earthquake strikes… Here in Los Angeles, we’ve made resilience a priority, retrofitting our most vulnerable buildings and delivering earthquake early warning to protect Angelenos’ lives and property,” he said.

Most Angelinos know, it’s not a matter of if the “Big One” will hit Southern California … it’s when.

According to the USGS, there is a 31% chance that an earthquake ranging in a 7.5 magnitude or higher will hit Los Angeles within the next few decades. And it’s estimated that roughly 2,000 people could die, 10,000 people could be seriously injured, and more than $200 billion in damages could occur.

If you live in Los Angeles, it’s important to be proactive about earthquake preparation and safety. One of the most effective ways to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your property is to have your home retrofitted for earthquakes.
