Are You Prepared for a Large Earthquake?

Posted November 11, 2021, under Blog

Last month, Californians prepared for the “Big One” wit the Great ShakeOut — an earthquake drill that asked residents around Los Angeles to stop, drop and cover at the same time. The drill served as a great reminder of the earthquake threat in California.

“As Californians, it’s critical that we know what to do and take steps to be prepared before, not after, an earthquake strikes… Here in Los Angeles, we’ve made resilience a priority, retrofitting our most vulnerable buildings and delivering earthquake early warning to protect Angelenos’ lives and property,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said about the earthquake drill.

While bracing for the shaking of an earthquake is essential when you are in the midst of one, there are other ways you can prepare for a sizeable temblor. Here are some other ways to get ready for an earthquake:

  1. Download the MyShake app: While there are a variety of earthquake apps you can download to your phone, the MyShake app will send you earthquake alerts for your specific region.
  2. Get your home inspected for earthquake retrofits: If you own an older home in California, chances are your property is lacking the modern structural safeguards to withstand the shaking from a large earthquake. 3. Have an evacuation strategy if you live near the beach: If you live near an ocean, have a plan of action for tsunami warnings and threats.
  4. Prepare an earthquake survival kit: Your kit should have enough food, water, and medication to last every person and pet in your household for at least 3 days. You can see what else to include in your kit by checking out our blog post.

When an earthquake occurs, it’s essential that you protect your physical safety immediately. The best way to do that is to drop and get underneath something sturdy like a table or desk, cover your head and your neck with something and hold on until the shaking stops.
