7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Southwestern Coast of Mexico
On Monday, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake rocked the southwestern coast of Mexico. The quake occurred at 1:00 PM ET, with the epicenter near the coastline of Michoacan state.
Intense shaking was felt in the nearby town of Colima, with moderate damage reported. Even in Mexico City, which is 300 miles away from the epicenter, light to moderate shaking was reported by residents.
Immediately after the temblor, firefighters in Mexico City closed several buildings due to concerns of collapse.
Thus far, only one death has been reported — a man who was at a shopping center in Colima and was struck by a falling fence.
Officials released a tsunami warning after the quake but have since cancelled the alert.
Though the tsunami warning was rescinded, waves averaging 9 feet high were predicted to hit Mexico and along the pacific coasts of Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and Peru.
Coincidentally, the timing of the earthquake fell on the fifth anniversary of the 2017 earthquake which killed 216 people in Mexico City.
