5.1 Earthquake Rocks San Francisco Bay Area

Posted October 31, 2022, under Blog

Late Tuesday morning, a 5.1 earthquake rocked the San Francisco Bay Area. The quake struck at 11:42 AM, with an epicenter roughly 9 miles from Seven Trees and 12 miles from San Jose.

The large temblor was followed up with a 3.1 aftershock just 5 minutes later.

The quake occurred along the Calaveras fault, which is the same fault system that produced a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in 1984.

Luckily, no damage or injuries were reported.

Tuesday’s earthquake is the largest seismic event to rattle the Bay Area since the devastating 2014 South Napa quake, which was a 6.0 magnitude.

The sizeable shaker should serve as a good reminder that California is earthquake country … and if you own a home in California, it’s important to have the property retrofitted for earthquakes.

Earthquake retrofitting grants – through California’s Earthquake Brace + Bolt initiative – are now open for enrollment, with qualifying zip codes able to receive grants up to $3,000.

There are over 500 zip codes that qualify for this grant in California, and residents can apply through November 29th to have their single-family home retrofitted for earthquakes.

The goal is for California to get as many vulnerable structures retrofitted for earthquakes, so that in the event of a large seismic disaster these properties will be better protected to handle the intense shaking.

Homes most at-risk are those that have been built before 1980 and especially before 1940, and those that have numerous steps above the ground.

These homes lack the structural reinforcements necessary – primarily due to their outdated building and safety codes — to keep these homes from sliding off their foundation during extreme shaking. And it’s estimated that there are 1.2 million homes in California with this structural defect.

Most earthquake retrofits in California cost between $3,000 to $5,000, with the cost being lower in Southern California in comparison to Northern California. Families from lower incomes may also qualify for additional grants to retrofit their properties.
