Earthquake Retrofitting Grants Open to California Residents
If you live in California, there are over 500 zip codes that now qualify for earthquake retrofitting grants for up to $3,000.
Through EarthquakeBraceBolt.com residents can apply through November 29th for a grant to have their single-family home foundations retrofitted for earthquakes.
The goal is for California to get as many vulnerable structures retrofitted for earthquakes, so that in the event of a large seismic disaster these properties will be better protected to handle the intense shaking.
We saw the damage earthquakes can do in the 1971 Sylmar quake, the 1994 Northridge quake, and the 2014 Napa quake.
The earthquake retrofitting grants have been funded by the Federal Emergency Management agency, with $80 million allocated to the cause.
Homes most at-risk are those that have been built before 1980 and especially before 1940, and those that have numerous steps above the ground.
These homes lack the structural reinforcements necessary – primarily due to their outdated building and safety codes — to keep these homes from sliding off their foundation during extreme shaking. In fact, it’s estimated that there are 1.2 million homes in California with this structural defect.
“It’s like you’re pulling the rug out from under the house,” said Janiele Maffei, the executive director of the Earthquake Brace + Bolt program and a structural engineer. The program, part of the California Residential Mitigation Program, has helped pay for the retrofits of 17,600 houses since 2014.
“With this $80 million, we’ll be more than doubling the number of houses” that will receive funds for this retrofit, Maffei added.
Most earthquake retrofits in California cost between $3,000 to $5,000, with the cost being lower in Southern California in comparison to Northern California.
Families from lower incomes may also qualify for additional grants to retrofit their properties.
