4.4 Earthquake Rattles Santa Rosa Residents

Posted September 15, 2022, under Blog

This week, Southern California got off to a shaky start as a 4.0 magnitude earthquake rattled residents near Santa Rosa on Tuesday at 6:39 PM.

The epicenter of the quake was five miles from Windsor, CA, seven miles from Rohnert Park, CA, and11 miles from Healdsburg, CA.

But this isn’t the only sizable shaker to strike the region – in the past 10 days there have been two earthquakes that have ranged in a 3.0 magnitude or greater in the area.

In addition to the Santa Rosa earthquakes, a 2.6 magnitude quake struck the San Fernando Valley Monday morning at 7:35 AM, less than .5 miles from Canoga Park.

So.Cal’s resident earthquake expert, seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones, tweeted about the recent earthquake swarm, reminding residents that with every earthquake there is a higher chance that a bigger quake may follow.

“Every quake has a 5% chance of being followed by a larger quake within the next 3 days. But most are only a little bit larger. When it is right on a big fault, capable of a big quake, the chance that following earthquake will be big is a little higher, but still small,” she tweeted about the week’s seismic events.

And while Southern California has been experiencing a higher volume of earthquakes over the past few weeks, Jones revealed that these smaller quakes do not decrease the chance of a larger earthquake occurring on these fault systems.

“Small quakes do not relieve the pressure for big quakes. The relative distribution of magnitudes of quakes is a constant,” she tweeted.

On average, there are 234 earthquakes every year between a 3.0 and 4.0 magnitude in California and Nevada — which is why as a homeowner in California, it’s essential to be proactive about earthquake preparation and safety.
