3.5 Earthquake Rattles Bakersfield

Posted August 29, 2022, under Blog

On Sunday, a 3.5 earthquake was reported at 3:48 PM roughly 29 miles from Bakersfield, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake occurred at a depth of just 3.4 miles, which intensified the shaking.

Luckily, there have been no other earthquakes reported in the area in the last 10 days — and no reports of damage to any nearby structures.

On average, there are 234 earthquakes every year between a 3.0 and 4.0 magnitude in California and Nevada.

Because of California’s location and terrain, it’s not a matter of if the “Big One” will happen, it’s when. Which is why as a homeowner in California, it’s essential to be proactive about earthquake preparation and safety.

Earthquake retrofitting is a necessary safeguard to protect your property in the face of a large earthquake.

This is the process of securing and reinforcing your home’s foundation to prevent it from crumbling or sliding off its foundation during intense shaking. During an earthquake retrofit, a foundation company will install additional hardware, in the form of foundation/anchor bolts, to reinforce and secure the structure.

And by today’s standards, building codes require every house to be affixed to the foundation with bolts, which was not previously mandatory for older homes. Thus, if you own a property in California that was built 20+ years ago, most likely your property needs earthquake retrofitting to bring the structure up to current building codes and safety standards.

It’s estimated that there are 30,646,165 people in California who are currently exposed to extreme earthquakes. Therefore, unless you’re living in a newly built house, your property is most likely at risk for extreme earthquake shaking and lacking the structural reinforcements to protect it.
