Ridgecrest Earthquakes Triple Chance of Large Quake on San Andreas Fault
Remember last year’s massive earthquakes out of Ridgecrest, CA? A new study says that earthquake series has increased the chance of a large earthquake occurring on the San Andreas fault by three times!
According to the study, which was published in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, there is now a 2.3% chance that an earthquake ranging in a magnitude of 7.5 or greater on the Garlock fault (which runs along the Mojave Desert) may occur in the next 12 months.
Such a scenario similarly increases the chances of a large earthquake occurring on the San Andreas fault by 1.15% in the next year.
While the number may seem small, it’s quite the jump. Especially since California is way past due for a major earthquake occurring along the San Andreas fault.
Seismologist Lucy Jones tweeted about the new data, reminding California residents of the very imminent threat of a large earthquake in our state.
“The possibility of a San Andreas quake AT ANY TIME should already be part of your planning or you shouldn’t be in California,” she tweeted in response to the study.
Adding, “Context. The chance of a San Andreas quake is up slightly, IF a Garlock quake happens because of Ridgecrest, and IF this model is correct. It’s elegant, but assumes a reason for quake triggering that is not consensus,” to clarify.
The new data highlights the importance of proper earthquake safeguards and preparation.
