Massive Earthquake Strikes Mexico

Posted September 9, 2021, under Blog

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Mexico late Tuesday, which caused widespread, intense shaking. It was felt as far away as Mexico City.

The temblor resulted in the death of one person. The quake occurred eight miles from the resort city of Acapulco. And over 92 aftershocks were reported – the largest ranking at a 5.2 magnitude.

Luckily, Mexico has installed an earthquake notification system. Alarms could be heard shortly before the shaking occurred.

While no major damage was reported, many people in the affected regions lost power. Around 1.6 residents were without electricity in Mexico City.

Of course, Mexico is no stranger to massive earthquakes. Because the country resides on the North American tectonic plate, the region is more susceptible to quakes.

The last major earthquake to hit Mexico occurred along the country’s southern coast, which left 32 people dead.

Like Mexico, California is currently working on an early earthquake warning system, in addition to Los Angeles’ mandates requiring the seismic retrofit of all wood-frame, soft story structures.

Recent data has shown that the San Andreas fault line is due for a major earthquake, with some seismologists predicting it will be an 8.2 magnitude.

Since earthquakes started being recorded, a quake has occurred along the San Andreas fault line every 100 years, and it’s been 160 years since the last major earthquake occurred.

“With 300 miles of fault all going in the same earthquake, you have everybody affected at the same time,” seismologist Lucy Jones told the L.A. Times about the probability of an earthquake occurring along the active fault system. “The San Andreas is the one that will produce the earthquake that’s going to cause damage in every city.”

Now, more than ever, it’s important to be proactive about earthquake preparation and safety.
