Malibu Rocked by 4.2 Magnitude Earthquake, Followed by Strong Aftershocks
Malibu residents were off to a shaky start early Wednesday morning when a 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck around 2:00 AM.
The epicenter was located offshore just 16 kilometers south of Malibu Beach, and at a depth of 14 kilometers.
A short three minutes later, the quake was followed up by a 3.5 magnitude aftershock at 2:03 AM. Two weaker aftershocks followed again at 2:22 AM and at 2:38 AM.
The scary shaker even prompted the Los Angeles Fire Department to conduct a rapid infrastructure survey of the affected areas.
“Your LAFD completed a strategic 470 square-mile survey of the City of Los Angeles following the 4.2M earthquake near Malibu. No damage or injuries were reported and normal operational mode has resumed,” LAFD released in a statement at 2:45 a.m.
The Malibu quake was only 17 miles southwest of the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the Northridge area in 1994, killing 72 people.
