Los Angeles Tops List for Most Dangerous Area for Natural Disasters in U.S.

Posted January 5, 2021, under Blog

Los Angeles is known for many things … but apparently, it’s been named the most dangerous area in the United States for natural disasters, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The data was collected in a new report by FEMA, where the risk for every county in America was calculated based on its probability to experiencing 18 different types of natural disasters – including earthquakes, wildfires, hurricanes, floods, volcanos, and tsunamis.

Los Angeles county took the number one spot, while the other counties in the top 10 spots included additional counties in California like Riverside and San Bernardino. Other notable areas included the Bronx in Manhattan, Brooklyn in New York City, and counties in Miami, Philadelphia, Dallas, and St. Louis.

The risk assessment was calculated to help city planners and emergency managers at the local, regional, state, and federal levels update their emergency plans, distribute resources, and educate communities and homeowners about their risk level.

Some of the safest counties included three suburban areas in Washington, and suburban counties outside of Boston, Long Island, Detroit, and Pittsburgh.

FEMA’s risk assessment is an important reminder for Angelinos that Southern California is ripe for earthquakes.
