Inglewood Rocked by 4.0 Magnitude Earthquake
It was a shaky start to Monday morning in the Inglewood area when a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck the region at 4:44 AM.
Located in the South Bay part of Los Angeles, the seismic event started with a few foreshocks around 4:15 AM.
The first two earthquakes registered at 3.3 and 2.5 magnitudes, before the 4.0 magnitude quake hit.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located south of West Century Boulevard close to the Hollywood Park Casino.
The quake was on the deeper side, at 11.8 miles. Luckily, there have been no reports of injuries or damages from the temblor.
The earthquake was felt throughout Southern California though, with residents in Lancaster, Laguna Niguel, and Ventura reporting shaking.
California’s earthquake expert, Lucy Jones said the earthquake was probably not on a mapped fault line.
“The M4.0 that just happened was under Lennox, CA, near Inglewood. Very deep at 20 km, so everyone is at least 20 km away. Would have been felt by most people awake in LA. Movement was thrust, probably not on any mapped fault,” Jones tweeted.
When an earthquake does strike, it increases the chances that a bigger earthquake may follow it. As of now, there is a 5% chance that the 4.0 shaker could be a foreshock to a larger quake.
Whenever California experiences an earthquake like this it’s an important reminder that California is earthquake country.
In fact, in the last 10 days, there have been three earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby Monday’s Inglewood temblor.
If you own a home in Los Angeles, it’s important to have the property inspected for earthquake retrofits.
Most older homes built in Los Angeles, especially those before 1985, are lacking the modern structural reinforcements to withstand the shaking from a large earthquake.
Luckily, earthquake retrofitting is a cost-effective solution that can reinforce a home’s existing foundation by adding extra hardware to make it more resistant to sliding off its foundation during an earthquake.
