Granada Hills Experiences 3.6 Earthquake, Felt in Los Angeles

Residents of Granada Hills were awaken by a 3.6 magnitude earthquake late Tuesday evening. The temblor struck around 11:41 p.m., with light shaking felt throughout the San Fernando Valley and nearby regions in Los Angeles.

Other reports of shaking from the quake came from residents in Santa Monica, Marina del Rey, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, the Hollywood Hills, downtown Los Angeles, Santa Clarita, Ventura County and the San Gabriel Valley.

While there were no initial reports of damage or injury, the Los Angeles Fire Department patrolled the affected areas with vehicles and helicopters after the shaking, which is a standard precaution in Los Angeles.

The epicenter of the quake was in the Van Norman Lakes Reservoir in Granada Hills, which is located near the intersection of the 405, the 5 and the 118 freeways.

This isn’t the first time an earthquake has struck the Granada Hills-based reservoir, in 1971 the dam was replaced after a 6.6 earthquake near Sylmar collapsed the system. The replacement did withstand the 6.7 Northridge earthquake in 1994.

If you live in California, you know it’s not a matter of “if” the Big One will strike as much as it is a “when.” That’s why it’s so important to take all the precautions necessary when it comes to earthquake safety.

Aside from having an earthquake disaster kit in your household with enough food, water and medication to last every person and pet in your home for at least three days, it’s important to have your property inspected for any earthquake vulnerabilities.

If you own an older property, seismic retrofitting is a necessary safeguard for protecting those who reside there and for maintaining the value of your home.

At Julian Construction, we’ll help you find the best solution for your seismic retrofitting needs and foundation problems.

No matter what your foundation situation is, we’ll conduct a (free) inclusive home inspection, followed by a detailed consultation, and at the end of our discussion we’ll provide you with a quote for repair.
