Earthquake Swarm Rattles Riverside County
It’s been a shaky few days for residents of Riverside county.
A swarm of seven earthquakes occurred throughout Riverside over the weekend, with the shaking felt as far as Los Angeles, Santa Clarita, Hollywood, Hesperia, Corona, and San Diego.
The largest of the quakes was a 4.9 in magnitude, which struck 10 miles southwest of Anza and 16 miles southwest of La Quinta.
The following 6 temblors ranged in magnitude from 3.6 to 2.6 – luckily there were no reports of damage during or after the earthquake swarm.
Tom Rockwell, a scientist at San Diego State University, said that there was a 5% chance these quakes could be a foreshock to a larger earthquake.
Seismologist Lucy Jones likewise weighed in on the rattling earthquake series, suggesting the quakes most likely occurred along the San Jacinto fault.
“Tonight’s (Friday 4/3) M4.9 quake SE of Anza is near (maybe on) the San Jacinto fault. The San Jacinto near Anza has had Many M~5 quakes over the last few decades,” she tweeted about largest of the quakes.
The news of Riverside’s earthquake swarm isn’t surprising though. If you live in California, you know it’s just a matter of time before the “Big One” strikes.
As a California resident, it’s important to plan and prepare for the next large earthquake. In addition to having an earthquake disaster preparedness kit in your home – with enough food and water to last each individual and pet in your household for at least 3 days – you should make sure your property’s foundation and structural codes are up-to-date with modern building and safety regulations.
If you live in an older property, or have noticed signs of foundation failure or damage, Earthquake retrofitting is a necessary safeguard for protecting your property and those who reside there.
At Julian Construction, we’ll help you find the best solution for your seismic repairs. No matter what your foundation situation is, we’ll conduct a (free) inclusive home inspection, followed by a detailed consultation, and at the end of our discussion we’ll provide you with a quote for repair.
