California Earthquake, 6.4 Magnitude Causes Widespread Damage
On Tuesday, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Northern California causing widespread damage and resulting in 2 confirmed deaths.
Occurring in Humboldt County, houses were shaken off of their foundations, pipes burst, and many first responders were left trapped at firehouses unable to respond to urgent calls for help.
The large temblor struck at 2:34 AM, leaving 15 homes red-tagged and roughly 30 people displaced for the holidays. The earthquake was followed by a dozen aftershocks, the most powerful one ranking in at a 4.6 magnitude.
“Damage assessments are currently underway, with significant structural damages, including gas and water lines, observed in the Rio Dell community and moderate damages to properties throughout the Eel River Valley,” said a statement from the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services.
As of now, 14,000 people are still without power.
That wasn’t the only notable earthquake of the week — just 24 hours later, a smaller quake hit east of Oakland. The 2.9 magnitude shaker left many San Francisco residents uneasy with fears of the inevitable “Big One” on the way.
