6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Northern California
On Monday, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred off of the coast of Northern California near Humboldt County. The shaker was felt as far away as San Francisco and Chico, California.
“It was slow rolling at first, but then it really got going,” Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said about the earthquake. “We haven’t had a shake like this since 2010.”
While there have been some reports of damage – namely broken glass – there’s still no word of any serious injuries or major destruction.
Local grocery stores near the epicenter of the quake experienced fallen food and broken wine bottles. One store owner said he was “shocked” at how long the shaking lasted for.
Those who have signed up for California’s early earthquake warning system successfully received alerts to their phones about the quake, getting notifications about 10-15 seconds before the shaking occurred.
While there have been several aftershocks, a tsunami warning has not been issued at this time.
