4.3 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Carson, Felt Throughout Los Angeles

A 4.3 magnitude earthquake rocked residents around the Carson area on Friday night. Shaking was felt all throughout the Los Angeles region with reports out of the San Fernando Valley, the Antelope Valley, Ventura County, Orange County and even as far as San Diego, according to the USGS.

With a depth of 9 miles, the quake struck the area at 7:58 p.m. The shaking lasted roughly 15 seconds.

While there was no major damage to report, the earthquake caused the Marathon Petroleum refinery to lose power. As a result, the refinery conducted a flaring event to burn off excess gas.

“Flares are safety devices and the flares are functioning as intended. There are no injuries or off-site impact,” a spokesman for the refinery told The L.A. Times.

Nevertheless, the shaking still rattled local residents as items flew off the shelves at nearby stores and in homes.

“All of a sudden, everything started shaking. A bunch of stuff off the shelves, there was wine everywhere, there was chocolate, syrup. It was crazy,” described Brandon Axe, who was working at a 7-Eleven store in Carson at the time the quake hit.

The Los Angeles fire department conducted an investigation after the temblor and determined there was no local infrastructure damage as a result.

A 3.0 magnitude aftershock was reported near Carson around 11:06 p.m.

According to local earthquake expert Lucy Jones, earthquakes of this size are extremely common in Southern California.

“This size happens on average somewhere in Southern California every couple of months,” she told the KCBS TV station. “When it happens to be in the middle of the Los Angeles Basin, then a lot more people feel it and it becomes bigger news.”

The scary shaker is a reminder that if you live in Los Angeles, it’s important to be proactive about earthquake preparation and safety.
