3.4 Earthquake Rattles Carpinteria
On Wednesday, a 3.4 magnitude earthquake occurred 1 mile from Carpinteria at 10:38 PM. Shaking was felt in Ventura, Oxnard, Santa Barbara and Port Hueneme. The quake was registered at a depth of 6 miles.
Luckily, this is the only earthquake to report in the region in the last 10 days.
Carpinteria is no stranger to seismic activity, though – just last year, the Carpinteria city council started discussing a city-wide ordinance requiring seismic retrofits of all soft story structures in the area.
While seismic retrofits are not mandated by the state yet, California state legislature has authorized cities throughout the region to enact mandatory retrofits when and where they see fit.
The cost of retrofitting a soft story building ranges in from $5,000 to $15,000 per unit and $40,000 to $160,000 per building.
If you live in California and own an older property or a soft story structure, seismic retrofitting is a necessary safeguard for protecting those who reside there and for maintaining the value of your property.
Southern California is one of the most seismically active regions in the world, which is why it’s so important to invest in earthquake retrofitting to protect your loved ones and your home value in the event of a large earthquake.
